You can feed SPDIF (2 channel) into the optical input and get analog or optical output from the Songbird. This depends on the output of the TV or Optical source. There are various stream formats.  See if you can change the output on your TV to PCM 2 Channel.  Also make sure the optical cable is pushed all the way in to Optical in on the Songbird. You should hear a click.  If that doesn't work, it may be an incompatible optical stream.
